It's a newly built Harry Barlow 204 engine, Harry built it about 3 months ago, it's only now it's been fitted and fired up, there is a clutch problem in it drags no matter how much it's adjusted, I've removed the clutch (cosa type) but cant find whats wrong, I was wondering if its the oil?

As long as it's non-detergent (ND) oil. I have some Briggs & Stratton 30 weight oil for the mower and it says it is a detergent oil.
You can use an API GL4 gear oil (75-80 or thereabouts) which may be better. Don't use GL5, it has additives that attack the yellow metal parts.

Just out of interest.........if the brass thrust washer (the one with a upturned lip on the outside) is fitted upside down (lip facing down) would this cause drag?

mmmm.......... i cant swear, but i'm sure it was face down when I took the clutch out! I will put it back the correct way, re assemble the clutch (after soaking the corks) and prey.

Odds on are the turrets in your basket aren't deep enough to allow the clutch to disengauge fully, they need to be 22mm. It's a known fault on Cosa cluthes.

It was ok before the rebuild, I think Harry just put new springs and corks in.
However, I've reassembled and fitted the clutch back in and it still drags, the thrust washer was the correct way round.

Im in the process of removing all the cosa clutches in my scooters, just don't trust them anymore. I think out of four cosa clutches in the last couple of years I have had one good one. Use banded clutches now. plenty of choices.
