I've got a heli-coil that's gone in a Lammie exhaust stud. The nut kept turning and it appeared the nit was turning the stud in the hole. When I took it out the heli-coil was wrapped round it. Advice appreciated.

Can I just replace the heli-coil with another one the same size?

Do I need to take the engine out to do this?

I've never put a heli-coil in before (though I have tapped thread, is experience necessary?

Is a heli-coil the best thing to use or is there any alternative?

Might be worth cleaning the hole out (Ooooh errr !!) and trying some JB weld. They claim it can be drilled and tapped so maybe worth a go. Heli-coils do work but i've never been wholly confident with them.

Helicoils are really only suitable for 'light' type holding, they are after all just a piece of coiled wire. The best way to fix it is with a Time sert kit, not cheap but you get what you pay for.

I've whipped the barrel off and taken it to a local firm which can put in timeserts. See how that works.
