Chain alignment

Ref my thread below about noise from gearbox,( and "Todays cock up" thread) I'm going to whip side casing off to check chain alignment. I have Sticky's with Broady's hint on measuring this, but wondered whether there would be any reason why you couldn't just whip chain out and measure between engine gasket face and edge of front sprocket and same to rear sprocket?? Does the chain have to be fitted?? I'd have thought if both are same height from gasket face then chain should be aligned correctly, or am I missing summat?

Me too , lay a straight edge across the casings and measure down with vernier calipers

Just doing this right now, what is the consensus? on the best point on the sprockets to measure to? Was thinking the 'root' of the gear teeth? Need to go 'gently' on tp the crown wheel to get an 'average' reading as there is inevitably a small (minimal) ammount of 'rock' ? Cheers
