I have wired everything up correctly as shown in SIPs instructions,
except my fuel gauge will not work properly, i have a full tank of fuel but the guage is saying half full, but the petrol light is on?
i have changed the ohms as per sips instructions, just a strange one, everything else is working ok,
just wondering what temperature in F are people getting reading from their engines?
im running a malossi 210, and seem to get around 200F when pottering around and about 300F when at full throttle gunning it,
also dunno if my gearing is wrong on my malossi as both old speedo and new sip speedo I can only get mine upto 75mph top

You raise quite a few points there. I have a SIP speedo on mine and so far so good.
Try all the setting options again for your fuel gauge. Mine works ok (apart from it goes down too quick)
Temperature wise I moved the CHT sender to one of the head bolts. Indicates about 50F cooler but no mucking about when checking the plug. I get 225F pottering about and 245F when holding flat out for several miles on the motorway. Your large temperature differance indicates to me that the atomiser is at least one size too big.
Speed wise sorry to say, there might be a setting not correct there. The Vespa speedos normally read 5 to 10 mph more than the SIP when round the far end of the dial. Check it with a GPS. Might as well indicate the real speed.

i fitted one of these to my project, still running it at the moment, nearly finished. Temperature I was getting 85c/185f sitting at 45mph for about 15 miles, speed readings seem ok, still using kph 48/30 & 62/40. I have not got round to changing to mph, or the time.
My speedo is working of the cable not fitted the digital cable and magnet thing, pissed of I had to spend another £30.

yer it is a strange one regarding the fuel sensor, i will check the wiring again at the weekend, only thing i think it could be is - the 1 to 7 pcb board that you put in the wiring socket could be the wrong way around, but if it was would the whole unit just not work?
as for the temperature sensor, i have connect mine to the cylinder head as its a SIP cylinder head with the threaded hole already on top, but yer I took mine out on the road again tonight, temp was around 200F when pottering around, 300F when giving it full throttle,
carb set up is -
phbh 28
x2 needle, 2nd clip
AV262
55 pilot
128 main
running it a bit rich, until I can get it dynoed, im booked in for 20th may,
plug colour is more brown to black,
only other thing I noticed on a run on it tonight was gears 1,2 3, were fine revs up to 8500 in each,
but then in 4th revs drop to 7000 and the speed stays at 70,
which i think is a bit slow, now i know you say even sip speedo won't be accurate, and gps will tell me true speed,
but something else thats strange in 4th is my revs pick up at about 73mph on the clock and it revs out, then sometimes the revs drop again a tad and then want to rev out again,
now that to me sounds like a clutch problem,
spec of my malossi 210 is as follows -
engine casings ported to match, new seals, bearing etc etc
phbh 28 running air hose
pinasco crank
Sip cylinder head - 1.2mm squish
timing set to 18 degrees
t5 7 spring clutch with 22/68 gearing - 3 plate surflex with uprated springs
T5 4th gear
SIP performance left hand exhaust
running a sip wide wheel, with over size tyre - 120/90/10,
now I was recommended the 22/68 gearing to help compensate for the oversize tyre I wanted to run (german style)
so not sure if that is effecting the top speed or my clutch is slipping in 4th or a combo of the two
any help would be much appreciated

I don't know anything about the Malossi 210 set up, but I was told that 330f was seizure temperature. If your plug is of good colour then i would imagine everything is good. Theres no way the speedo can be accurate on every set up. I will post my specs later on. I only really bought it for the speedometer and cylinder head temperature which I'm happy with, the rev counter doesn't seem to work, did at the start but not now. Im not running a battery, does that make a difference.

MCH, 7000 in top on your set up is about 70+ so speedo is not so bad.
Your clutch is slipping. I have had similar before. You need more springs or stronger ones. Don't let it slip too much, it's not doing it any good.
The connector plug the wrong way round is the problem with the gauge. There is a number 1 on it to line up.
Put in a 50 or 52 pilot. 55 is way too big for your set up. Try to get it hotter when pottering around at low throttle. If the smaller pilot isn't enough to get the temp up then drop the needle 1 clip. 300F flat out is perfect

cheers for the info, means i can sort it this weekend,
what clutch plates and springs do you recommend?
i was running surflex 3 plate and DR springs,
i have some stronger malossi springs but they were a bitch to pull in on the lever, way too stiff,
would 4 plate instead of 3 make any difference? and what springs would be ideal to be somewhere between DR and malossi,
or should I order more DR as im not 100% sure if the springs i got from beedspeed were actually DR

I know he has closed down but contact Al Terry (diablo) on here, I had the same problem with the fuel light coming on quickly, speed reading wrong and a few other problems and he sorted them.
It all works fine now.
Polini 220

TS1 and PX stay in the garage (future barn finds) out on the GTS 300 when I go out on a scooter.
I know I’ll get there and back

The last two I have done are with Newfren Carbon 4 plate and SIP XL springs. No slip at all. Not too heavy on the lever. And with new fat thrust washer and internal bushes they don't grab on pull away either.MCH wrote:cheers for the info, means i can sort it this weekend,
