New 200 SIL stripdown ... Grit and sand...!!

Taking an SIL engine apart its the one I posted the pics of the stator repair and 12 volt rewire....

I thought after all the scare stories I had heard, I would do a complete strip and rebuild... This is a new factory item... Took the barrel off first.... the head studs and nuts must have been tightened by Superman... Tight is an understatement... But the barrel is quite tidy for an Indian stage 4.. I will fit an Asso after its been honed to size...
With the barrel removed, I then gauged the bore to piston clearance... Using a micrometer and a pin gauge then checking again with feeler gauges... its got less than 2 thou of an inch clearance... Thats too tight IMO...
The Cylinderhead has a poor gasket face on one edge ( badly cast )... I will try to post a photo ... The crank is also missing a small piece of Crank web, again... photo needed...But I dont think it will effect the running.... The small end bearing was covered in grease and grit...... Yam 110 rod to be fitted...

When I took the side case off, having drained the oil which was very gritty... the inside of the case was also covered in some sort of grit or sand... I will take the gearbox and axle out and replace all the bearings so they dont fail later....The chain also had about 20mm of up and down free play... fitting an IWIS

The good news is the drive bearing is a 6305 C3, seven ball bearing Item, but the bad news is its full of grit... The mag bearing is an NU 2205 E C3... luckily this is clean and grit free...
I Can see a need to check these engines prior to using them but prehaps this is just a bad one out of the batch... :( ... Anyone else had this with a new SIL..??

I had exactly the same, supposed to be a new SIL engine. Internally it was bloody awful, the barrell & piston looked as though they were covered in grinding paste and there was a lump out of the cylinder head face

I really dont want to discredit anyone over this engine through this post so I wont name names...
But I know it was one out of a batch of 25 engines... Maybe mine is just a bad one..?? But the main point of my post was to highlite possible weak points that could cause a premature failure of one of these engines.... Mine was still in the crate, I unwrapped it myself... and I have no doubt its a genuine SIL engine... I have known people put these in and run them for thousands of miles as they are with no problem, but this Engine wouldnt have run for long before it failed... IMO... Not really a problem for me, as I was going to port the barrel skim the head and rebuild the crank anyway and the stator was getting a twelve volt conversion.....
I took a picture of the inside of the engine showing a little of the grit/sand but its not turned out well enough to post... So I will try again tomorrow, as I intend to put up a couple of scooter racing posts up as well tomorrow....

its almost as they are now using the reject parts.....dragged out of the "useless parts bin"to cobble together the last few motors.............. :lol:

Might be worth asking some of the other dealers what they are finding. The only one I can think of having bought from him is Bruce Langley at Resurrection. My engine was rebuilt by him.
I concur with the cheap slack drive chain but for the time being I have upped the sprockets to 19/47, which has taken up all the slack. :!: :!: :!:
