After various problems with my Mugello 186 V4 I'm now trying to fit my JL3 exhaust, and I'm running into the same problem I've read about from others i.e the exhaust gasket face is too far from the piston and too close to the ground (if the engine was in place).
I measured a couple of other barrels I have and it was around 13mm from piston skirt to exhaust gasket face ,on the Mugello its 24mm   .
This is causing a hell of a problem getting the exhaust to fit.
Has anybody come up with a way around this? I know Chiselspeed do a special short stub because of this problem with the V4 Mugellos, would one of their stubs fit a JL3?

Correct me if I'm wrong ,but could you not cut 11mm off the pipe stub and manifold to end up as it should? There should still be enough stub left to seal the joint with Silicone.

I had been thinking the same thing, cut some off the stub and some off the pipe that goes into the stub. But I don't really want to butcher a brand new JL pipe :?

What does the shop it came from suggest? You'd like to think they've thought of a solution..

I know that some mugellos seem to have come like this and some dont depending on when they were manufactured and what model they were.

I know of several that you had to basically angle grind the front exhaust hanger vertically, then re weld it so it drops the bottom holes by about a centimetre to ensure the jl fits right.

doesnt only happen on jls either, the hanger on my clubman had to be reworked too.

I contacted Charlie Edmunds about this Mugello problem I'm having and he told me that the extra 10mm at the exhaust port is a design feature to aid gas flow and cooling and all the Mugellos have been this way for the last 4 years.
Emailed Jim Lomas about it as well and he said he'd never heard of a problem.
