Lighting coils on an Vespa electronic stator,

Continuing the story of a Rally 200 engine that I bought a few years back, (which had previously been converted to a modern P200E type 12v stator.)

After replacing some minor bits, after a strip down, it successfully fired up yesterday. Engine ran OK, but no power in the blue wire coming from the lighting coils.

Checked with volt meter on blue wire and black earth wire and almost zero. As a double check, connected a 35w headlight bulb to these two wires and just a faint glow.

Checked both of the blue and black earth cables back to the coils to see if there was any bare parts to cause it to earth out, but all looks OK. Earth wiring to lighting coils looks OK.

Also tried two separate electronic flywheels.

Now I could juts buy another stator, but why should all of the coils fail, or am I missing something????

If its the original stator wiring check for continuity on both ends as they are a fine gauge and tend to break. If all ok then new coils can be fitted to the stator.

Wack. I measured the resistance between the 2 wires and it was zero. Is that what you mean by continuity? .

Put meter on buzzer to check the wire isn't broken

If the P200E stator is similar to the Indian 12volt Lambretta ones, a reading of around 1 or 2 ohms is normal. The gauge of wire is very thick compared to the LT coil and around 70ish turns per coil. If you had a bad earth connection, the resistance would be higher. What is the magnetism of the flywheel like?

Right Wack, I'll try that. And Colin just same as a lambretta and both flywheels have strong magnets. Second flywheel that I used as a check came of a working engine.

The problem with the lighting coils is that the resistance of GOOD coils is so close to a short circuit that measurement is almost worthless. Did you have another stator to try?
