how do you replace the original outer speedo cable on a series 3 ?
The hole at the bottom of the steering tube is tiny and far too small to allow a speedo outer cable with lock nut to pass through.

Do I drill the hole larger ? or am I missing something ? wish my sticky would hurry up and arrive

put the speedo inner only up through the hole in the forks from the bottom, the "wrong way up" of course, so the hub end goes in first...
then thread the outer over the top of this and down to the hub
pull out the inner
and feed it through the outer from the top...

and put something round the outer below the ferrule that screws to the speedometer unit, it's a bitch if that falls down the fork tube...

thanks byron but that is the problem ! The cable is too big to fit through the tiny hole at the bottom of the steering tube !

its not the cable its the cable nut that won't go through .

As far as I can see lying on my back looking up the hole is only as wide as the outer cable and is very tight fit. grrrrrr

"its not the cable its the cable nut that won't go through ."

as Byron said:-

remove old cable
put new inner up thru bottom hole (oer matron) so the lower part is put in upside down
feed the new outer down the wrong way round inner to guide it to the bottom hole
when outer is thru hole remove inner
feed inner down from top

you are removing the bottom connecting piece (plastic and locknut first) aren't you?

Chris

I didn't know that it was removable ? the original cable looks to be made in one piece but it is 50 years old and very stiff and manky lol.

Ah I see ! there is a plastic olive that can be removed so that the ferrule can come off .
Ok I see how it is done now thanks .

Actually not that bad.

Happend to me the other nite when the little O ring fell apart.

Remove speedo cable from fork tube.

Fire up air compressor

Stick air compressor nozzle in to speedo hole, hit air lever while having other hand at the top of the fork tube to catch the ring.

The rush of air will shoot the lock ring right out every time.

Beats the hell out of dropping the forks or flipping the bike over
