Indian gear ratios

I'm putting an SR190 engine together at the moment and the doner engine has a Super Vijay Mk2 gearbox with the following ratios:
Xmas Tree, 10, 13, 17, 21
Loose gears, 50, 41, 37, 33
I can see that the 3rd to 4th jump is quite large but any thoughts? The scoot it's going in will be used mainly in and around London so probably won't be using 4th much anyway. The cylinder is as it came from SR and the intention is for a mild torquey tune, not a screamer.
Cheers in advance

Yes but has anyone ever ridden a scoot with one in? It's out of a GP150 and presumably it was able to propel it's former owner around India with his family and wordly goods strapped on board so maybe a torquey tune SR190 would cope around the streets of London
I'm being tight and not wanting to splash out on another one or use the 125S box I have spare/ear marked for another project

i did something similar a while ago for a customer............he had the same box
i used an AF 175 kit.......ported with max torque in mind...........
its going very well he tells me.........
so you should be ok........................

There's no doubt it will function as a gearbox, and will certainly propell you wherever you go. If you are on a budget, or are being frugal etc.....then go for it. But, most people throw these in the bin, as the ratios are not very nice.
I suppose it comes down to dosh (as do most things) £60 gets you a GP200 gearbox from Scooter Restorations:
http://www.scooterrestorations.com/lamb ... d-cluster/ and £70 gets you an Li150 gearbox from Beedspeed:
http://beedspeed.com/product_info.php/c ... ts_id/6318 so just consider this....whilst you have your engine in bits.....is it worth £60 to put a decent box in? Because if you don't do it now, and you dont like the VJ box when its done......its £60 and a full strip. Whereas if you fit the box now, you know you've got it right first time.
Just depends if you wanna risk building it to find out, i've heard some people do use them with no issues, but its more the exception than the rule, and even if they are usable (as in Seans example above) im sure the scoots that do use them would be even better with a GP or Li box in anyway?
Hope that helps.
Dan

Thanks fornthe replies fellas, I think I will give it a go out of sheer devilment if nothing else, Shuans experience gives me a glimmer of hope
Just seems a shame to bin it as it's practically unworn, just wish the crank was in better shape. Actually, that will be another thread

I'd try it Colin, it might just work fine. Don't bin it because someone else says it's crap, especially if you can save money by not needing a new gearbox.

Hi Coaster
I've used one
I built my Muggy 186 using a SIL GP150 donor and I thought I'd try the Vijay Mk2 gearbox to see how bad it was after all the reports I'd read!
It was as bad as all the reports I'd read
My Mugello has a 28mm PHBH, Ram Air and a JL3. I've never had a scoot with an expansion before and was quite shocked how little torque it had even with what I was led to believe was one of the more torquey pipes!
This baby wouldn't pull the 4.8 final ratio as soon as it came to the slightest gradient or headwind. I replaced it with a standard Indian GP200 gearbox and sprockets which gives a final drive of 5.2. This gives a far better ride and allows you to get into the power band.
As far as the Vijay's gap between 3rd & 4th it seemed far worse than my slightly tweaked SX150 box which also has a gap there.
Out of interest, I really notice the jump between 2nd & 3rd on the late Indian GP200 box but it's much better on the whole
I hope this helps.
Cheers,
Nigel
