Check new exhaust for leaks

What is the best way to check a brand new exhaust for leaks (untidy welding) BEFORE fitting and test riding it? Does simply filling it with water work (without causing any damage)? The exhaust in mind would be a Vespa box-type.
Cheers, Chris

Why would you want to check a brand new one ? if it looks dodgy send it back .I would try and use compressed air rather than water if i were to test it but the easiest way is just fit it and see

Bung it, pump up with a foot pump, about 5-10psi will do, spray welds with soapy water.

Seems like a load of faffing about for no good reason to me, fit it and if it leaks, send it back for replacement. Is there really any widespread problem with exhausts leaking at the welds

Because if you're forking out a fair few bucks to have it coated with something flash, it's f'king annoying to find three holes in the downpipe that need welding up.

I'd certainly check it's suitability and fit before I coat it in some flash finish, been there before
