Tight chain.

Hi all, I've just fitted an 81 link chain and it is guitar string tight. It is so tight there's probably less than 1mm up and down movement and I struggled to get the rear sprocket on. I've checked it's the right number of links and the sprockets are correct (47/16) and they are all ok. Will it stretch a little once running or do I have a problem? I don't want to mess about taking the sidecasing off once fitted. Any comments or ideas very welcome.
Pete.

is it that tight top and bottom?

If it is I would consider 82 pitch to be on the safe side- an 81 should fit OK so it could be you have a problem with either/ both sprockets??

A chain that tight will will cause problems with the chain rollers eventually, and you may find some bits in your oil when you drain it!

Hi Chris, thanks for your reply. I'm thinking the same thing, an 82 link with a pull down tensioner. I've got a spare one kicking about in my shed. Do you think that would be ok?
Thanks again Pete.

I recon thats your best option- I ran a tight 80 link on a TV175 with a 16 front and when I changed the oil there were rollers that had started to break up.

As I said, according to the books an 81 link should be OK with your sprocket set up- but it only takes a small tolerance difference on either/ both sprocket diameters to cause it to be too tight.

An 82 with a push/ pull down adjusted correctly would seem to fit the bill rather than run an 81 which is putting strain everywhere.
