Through the kind advice of Adam Winstone on here, I have identified what seems to be a fairly common issue with some Electronic kits . I have an Indian Electronic Flywheel with a Points boss fitted I have a spare Electronic boss in the garage and wondered has anyone ever swapped these out before, or will it cure the timing issues I have been having

Where'd you get it from? Can't you get them to take it back or is it not new?

I believe it's not too difficult to drill out the rivets and bolt in a new boss.

I got it via Ebay...I know that I shouldn't have, but I did. I tried to contact the supplier, but a week later, no reply, or response. It would be pretty easy to drill the rivets out and replace the boss, securing via high tensile bolts etc, but I just wanted to know if anyone else has done this, and does it cure the problems regarding trying to set the timing ??

There are so many possibilities that this could either go 'right' or 'wrong' for you to seriously post this as an 'open' question.

You need to visually inspect the components and form a conclusion as to wether the keyway in the new boss aligns the trigger on the flywheel within range of the stator adjustment range to achieve BTDC spark in your desired range.

And then do a god job of securing the new boss

Agreed best thing would be to compare the possibilities with a known good flywheel.

As it stands you've nothing to loose drilling out the rivets on the crap one as it's nowt but a paper weight right now. Once you've done that you can offer up the electronic one and see what the alignment looks like.

Edit: this one should be right enough, it's my spare and compares with my original Ducati one. I've aligned the pickup with the fingers on the magnets and it lines up with the marks on the outside too.

No worries gents...I will try and drill it out tomorrow and see what happens.

i had one of these a few years ago and drilled out the centre boss and its not a case of just moving it o the next hole round you have to drill through the flywheel between the original holes it did work though i didnt strobe it but the timing marks lined up but mines was pure guess work and prob a bit o luck i used high tensile screws nylocks and tread lock although you wood be better welding boss as mbd does if you can get a mates good flywheel and copy the measurements

^... is it the bosses that differ (keyway position) or the holes in the flywheel? If Mark buys a new (correct) electronic boss, rather than try to rotate the current points boss, are the holes in the flywheel then going to be in the right place for the new boss? Like others have already said, I'm not sure that any 'assumptions' can be made to these parts but it would be good to know if anyone has done this substitution and how easy/difficult it was?

hi adam i didnt replace the boss as i cant see any difference between points and electronic bosses i think its that these flywheels have they key way in the points position although when you first look at it you think its just a matter of removing rivets and moving it round you cant so you have to do as i said and re drill which i will admit i was worried may weaken the flywheel mines was on a bog standard 200 and li taper theres no way i would use this on something really powerful (i was skint at the time!!) although i think they are just badly made there is a chance that there is diff between points n electronic at the rivet hole spacing because the amount that stops it just moving round a bit or to next hole is like half a hole if that makes sense? for peace of mind i would prob try and pick up a decent flywheel from a rep dealer cheers stevie mc

Doesn't the points boss have 'bias' to activate the cam on the points as well though?
