Hi guys,

I've been building an engine for my Series 1 but have encountered a little problem!

I've used a Series 3 Li125 case with a new indian mag housing
Crank is a 60mm evergreen crank

When I tighten the mag housing on it jams against the crank!

I'm sure the crank is pulled all the way through.

It only grabs when I tighten the flange down, so it must be only fractions of a mm out.

Is this a common problem?

I was thinking a slightly thicker mag flange gasket would fix the problem, or maybe try to dress down the mag flange face with some sand paper on a mirror?

Any other thoughts on this?

Cheers,

Christiaan

Hi there Dryballs.have you checked the big end clearance on the casing?had a similar problem with this crank had to grind out a channel.
or is the oil seal retaining plate sitting proud?

Hi Simon,

I'll check it out... I also had the big end rub on a couple of places when I first put the crank in. I routed a channel in the casing for this with my die grinder

I might take the crank out and check the seal plate, but I would have thought it would catch on the crank rather than just push the crank out.

mmmm something more to ponder!

check your oil seal retaining plate to see if it"s warped, aluminium ones are crap. have you lubed everything on assembly? somtimes a coating of clean two stroke makes everything ok. i never assemble an engine "dry". you could try two mag housing gaskets, but your better off trying to fettle the root cause of the problem. hope this helps. goldeneye.

Check crank webs are fully pressed together, look at crank pin is it flush with webs? also crank may be out of true?

Thanks for your thoughts guys,

I might pull the crank out and check it over.

I'm not too keen on using 2 mag gaskets, its kinda like using 2 head gaskets! although I guess I could silicon them together?

I'll let you know what the crank looks like.

Cheers,

Two gaskets is not as big a crime as two head gaskets. It is an easy thing to try, without stripping the engine.
