Cdi help needed as i'm really confused

Need some info here folks if I can,as i'm a tad confused. Now as I've mentioned in a previous thread,i've had nothing but woes with stator plates and misfires, but have a question regarding cdi units and compatability with stators. My scoot has seemed to have nothing but issues with the AFR stators, which have been run in conjunction with the AFR cdi and an indian regulator. To cut a story short, the work has been done on a kind of warranty. I was guinea pig to the new UNI 120w stator, but they said that stator just exaggerated the misfire issue. At my instruction and total disillusion,i specified a BGM stator. Now I know that BGM now have their own cdi and rectifiers available now,but prior to this,i assumed that most used Ducati items with the BGM stator. The BGM stator was fitted and again the misfire was even worse. However the stator was used with the AFR cdi and Indian regulator.. I thought they would of used the Ducati items with the stator, but no. They told me that they stock 3 types of cdi...Mitsubisishi,the Ducati vespa px cdi and their own AFR version. What has confused me is the claim that the Mitsubishi one is only suited to standard motors and not my TS1,the Vespa Ducati one is only designed to work upto x amount of revs, but the AFR one is designed to work with high power/revving motors. This is where i'm confused.I thought the Ducati cdi units were the same,as for the Mitsubishi ones,i'd never heard of them until last year and the AFR ones are Indian. Can anyone please help me with this as electrics are my enemy and this has confused me. Are there different Ducati cdi for use on Lammies,as I haven't heard anyone advertise the fact.Cheers,Speedy.PS,the regulators used have been the Steelbird branded one previously and that has been changed to the even worse Swiss branded one.Cheers again.

I can't give you a complete answer but I can categorically say that the voltage regulator will have NO bearing on your miss-fire. Also, I suspect you're being fed a bit of 'bull' about cdi suitability for TS1 engines, the blue Ducati is the best option as far as I'm aware.

Coaster seems to have already made the statement that I was about to make. However, I would add that the issue has been there with 2 stators so I'm wondering whether it might not be a flywheel or flywheel/stator trigger alignment issue that you're suffering, in which case the CDI is not the problem.
AFR light flywheel? I ask as many people report misfires with these, although most can be resolved by sorting out the alignment (more buggering about).

I'd agree with Adam on the likelihood that its a stator/pickup misalignment causing the issue.....not the CDI.
Aside from that, I have also heard (but have no conclusive proof) that the AFR CDI is better suited to high-revving engines and to the the AFR light flywheel. Plug gaps should also be set slightly larger with the AFR light flywheel.

Thankyou folks for the input as I've been at a loss. To add some more info,i used to have the AFR Lightweeght flywheel[the Ducati copy] This was removed 2 years ago as it kept rubbing the AFR stator/pick up.I was told that without machining the mag housing, they couldn't use it on my bike.I always thought there were other ways, like machining the flywheel back for instance, but hey ho. They then fitted me a SIL short fin, machined midweight flywheel. That has been on until last week. For no apparent reason, other than experimenting, they have now fitted the AF midweight flywheel in its place. Why they have put a swiss regulator on is beyond me.That is the brand they first fitted that lasted 86 miles before it failed and blew all me bulbs.

At least you knew what I meant.

After my last engine rebuild my original AF Ducati flywheel was catching on the pickup when torqued down but an AFR one was not. On measuing the AFR one has about 0.8 mm more depth inside. I got the AF one machined to the same depth on the inside face and that ured the rubbing.

So then folks, the talk of Ducati cdi's being unsuited is technically not true?. Cheers,Speedy.
