Have you got the hub on and torqued sometimes that's needed to pull the layshaft through? I had this on mine and could not get it shimmed without using a spacer.

Are the gears definitely slightly higher than the layshaft?

Is the endplate original to the casing, especially important on Indian casings?

How are you determining 'too tight'? If it won't turn try fitting the clutch shim and centre and tightening it. This can sometimes loosen a tight box (oooo errr).

There's so many variables in the gearbox it's often a case of working through it a step at a time.

yes hub tight, its a series 2 li150 casing that was up and running with a late model gp box,but its now replaced with an li150 box, first gear is sitting just a little higher than the layshaft as it should be,its a sil endplate, down to a 1.0mm shim, and spider tightened down, the back wheel does turn but it takes some effort,il order a 0.8 shim and try that.

seems this box does present a few problems ,as said and assuming all cogs are the correct way round and sitting above the layshaft
