Could I in theory use more than one base gasket to help me achieve the correct squish? It looks like I'll need three possibly four to get it set as I want it. Thanks in advance for any comments / advice Pete.

Just remember that it will change your port durations (longer exhaust/transfers, shorter inlet) which may or may not be a desirable depending on what kit/state of tune you have.
Why not use a thicker head gasket?

If this is for your imola Cambridge do different sized head gaskets for this purpose. I'd reccomend the brass base gasket also.

No mate for an RB22 a mate is building for me. He's saying three base gaskets will do the job but I'm not convinced. He has built loads of good engines with no issues and knows his stuff. I'm probably just being paranoid or am I?

AFdo base gaskets in a variety of thicknesses.

If you get the arithmetic right and get the right mixture of base and head that puts it where you want it.

I'd use an alloy packing plate, they vary from 0.3 mm up to around 5 mm.
