Apart from the engine (obviously) what makes a Rally a Rally.
How do they differ from other models that to my uncultured eye look pretty much the same.

A 6ft1 that's not a problem I suffer from.
I just wondered how to spot a real one rather than say a 150 super or the equivalent Indian with 10" wheels

Never been really bothered about frame numbers. If it looks the part then thats good enough for me.

most obvious differences include ,handlebars (large round headlight as opposed to slightly smaller or squarish ) ,legshield tool box instead of bolted on side panel box with lid .plus subtle differences in panel pressings to some other similar looking types .

Spare wheel under left panel, and watch out for the TS 125, looks the same as a Rally but with 125 motor.

What about spotting the Bajaj equivalent.

There isn't one. The Bajaj (certainly the most recent ones which were based I think on a Sprint Veloce) will have smaller sidepanels with a toolbox in the left hand panel. These panels will not fit on a Rally as the dimensions and mounting points are different.
I once bought a panel from SIP which was sold to me as a Rally panel but it was for a Sprint. It was smaller and differently proportioned. Rally panels were out of production for some years but I think can be bought from SIP now.
Basically, if somebody is trying to tell you that a bike is a Rally, and it hasn't got a spare wheel under the lefthand panel, they are trying to pull a fast one.
If it has got a spare wheel under the lefthand cowl it could be a GS160, SS180, Rally 180, Rally 200, TS125, or one of the Spanish Moto Vespas which also had some other unique points.
Or a P-Range, but presumably you know what those look like....

i always thought the rally chassis number is on the engine side at the rear and the sprint etc is on the other side under the toolbox at the bottom edge of the frame..
