Timing with different casing?

I recently had problems with a twisted crank and damaged casing. I've rebuilt the engine with all the original parts, apart from a different casing, crank, flywheel and new bearings and seals. The top end is the same, as is the mag housing etc. When I set my timing before (17 degrees), the stator bolts sat just off centre. I'm just setting it up statically for the time being on the new set up and I've had to move the stator completely anticlockwise and this still was not enough and have hat to extend the slots as far as I dare go without leaving too little on the ends. Does this seem plausible? It's the BGM stator I was already using and a new mid weight AF flywheel?

Are you using the same timing marks on the mag housing as you did for the old set up??

you problem may be the mid weight flywheel - I had problems with one and it appeared that boss had been put in the wrong position

so the arrow and marks on the window to line up with the pick up were out in relation

in the past I have changed stators on the side of the road and just eyed them up as best as possible (did it on route C2C this year 30 miles in and completed there and back)- always air on caution but been somewhere near.

what flywheel were you using before the twisted crank ? Try the same type of flywheel # if you can get hold of one and see if any difference

Started again using a piston stop to find my new TDC and remarked everything.

Gaz, could be, it's the same make of crank, so wouldn't of thought there would have been too much difference? Suppose will have to wait till Ive got it in the frame and started so I can strobe it? :(

typo in my reply should have read ;-

I binned the midweight off and returned to SIL lightened the same as the mid weight - no problems with it

if the boss is out you might struggle

Apologies if this is a stupid question,but how do you set your timing statically,without the engine running and strobing it?

Good for starting points, and then check with a light once up and running.
