Registering a vespa with no ID

Hi people-just got hold of a cutdown px frame with no frame number or V5-is it worth me building this? I reckon its going to be a pain to get it registered with no ID? How would i get it registered?

I suspect that it would be grief and plenty of it. I'm not sure if the dvla would touch it.

Just googled it-looks like i need a "single vehicle approval test" ending up with a Q plate-or find a V5 with a "rotten" frame,wink wink..

I bought this frame in good faith-have name addess of the seller-EBAY-its all above board blah blah-how many scooterists have used logbooks for different frames over the years?!

right guys,i know the depth of feeling towards scooter/bike thieves-been a victim myself,but as i've just been accused of being one i have to say my piece to defend myself so here goes......i am a hardworking honest father of two who has been into scooters for over 30 years,i've earned everything i have and would never steal anything....i got the frame cheap off ebay so it could be traceable-not off a local scallywag down the pub or whatever...If i'd nicked it would i really be willing to spend loads on it and take it for an official SVA test as i said in my first post!? think about it...also i wonder how many people on here have used v5's for other frames over the years? last year there was a lambretta logbook on ebay with 200+ watchers and over 50 bids before it got pulled and i'd bet a fair few of them were members of this forum...so,to sum up-i ain't no lowlife thieving scumbag-just an honest scooter enthusiast trying to get back on the road..thankyou

The whole frame number issue is a legal minefield. A mate of mine used to run his own garage and regularly bought written off cars and vans and then bought a brand new, unstamped body-shell direct from Ford. He'd then transfer all of the mechanical bits over and hey presto, a new car. In all the years he was doing it, he could never get a definitive legal opinion from the DVLA or the Police. Eventually he was told to cut the chassis number out of the old vehicle and stick it on the new shell in such a way that it was obvious what he'd done.

That was years ago though and who knows what new and exciting rules they've made up since then.

Hmmm.....Problems !! No chassis number so who can identify what type of vehicle it is ? It may be a LML frame and you may try to register it as a Vespa, or it could be a Homemade frame and again you could be saying it's a Vespa/LML/Bajaj/etc. So, other than what it looks like (cut down won't help), what make is it ?? Now the next tricky bit would be insuring it, again, how can you prove what type of vehicle it is ?? I know you can register an unknown frame but after the hassle with DVLA (i don't think you'll get Vespa/Piggio/LML on your logbook) you'll then have to get a specialist insurer to insure your frame, "of unknown origin". keep us posted on this one if you have any success, as i'm sure there's a few others in the same boat.

There must be a process for doing it legally - you can buy complete bodyshells for MG's.

I would imagine having a frame or chassis with no number is going to be the sticking point no matter how you acquired it.

I daresay when you buy a new shell you receive (from a reputable dealer) a receipt and conformation of the make and model the shell is. Plus you would already have the original details of the vehicle you are putting the shell on to.
