Ian , the Marks on the Top are your TDC marks which are done when building and you set your timing marks on there for Strobing
As my Dad used to say "Each to their own lad"

Describe exactly what you have done so far. Was the top dead centre mark checked using the dead stop method? did you then measure and mark the timing mark on the mag flange using a timing disc? Does the mark move as you rev the engine? Have you tried another CDI unit?

Those cheap kits are very likely the same kit you buy from a more reputable dealer after they have been checked for poor soldering.....£80 IS a bit too cheap so might not be a genuine SIL item :?

I had a flywheel that had the center boss riveted in the wrong place (I kid you not)

I just couldn`t get the timing right and in the end (after swapping out 2 stators), I put it down to a faulty strope. HAHA!

Well, I wasn`t laughing when I holed the piston in my MB tuned TS1.

It wasn`t until I compared my flywheel to a mates that I saw that the problem. You live and learn, I suppose.

When there is a fault on the ignition, the timing marks will strobe OK at low revs, but under load they shoot all over the place.....it can be anything in the electrical equation, but usually a bad stator/flywheel combo not firing properly. Try a different flywheel first, then a different stator.

I had problems when I first got my GP, turned out to be the pickup, replaced with a K2 pickup from ebay and it was fine, not long after I swapped for BGM anyway as I was paranoid about reliability

I decided that as there was such a plethora of marks around the same area that I would create all my own new marks

very simple and effective, lined flywheel up with current TDC, then picked an area round at about 3 oclock, put a small nick/groove in the flywheel edge, about 2mm deep.

used that mark to get my new TDC using dead stop method. then marked off the mag flange with 15 17 19 21 and 24 degrees, used the hacksaw blade to draw across and create a shallow indent that was in line with the crank centre, then some white car paint, spryaed that area, and wiped it with a cloth, leaving the paint in the bottom of the dents

nice clear new marks, I did multiple as I was going to 15 degrees static for now, but eventually when I can afford it I would like an mtech or agusto to give me some bottom end back, so the other marks will come in use then.
heavy is good, heavy is reliable, and if it does fail, hit them with it!!!

The mark on the flywheel lined up with the 2 white lines on the pick up,then it went all over the shop ,the marks appeared at the top if that makes sense ,that was when at quite low rpm ,weird ?? :?

Thanks all Ian

I wouldnt trust the markings, the arrow on my flywheel that you supposed to use to check the timing was a long way back from the edge, and pissed LOL, it didnt point outwards inline with the crank centre, so I had no idea what was going on, other flywheel I have, the centreboss is marked wrong and rivvetted in wrong place

just make your own marks from scratch and be done with it, takes few minutes but at least you know that they are right and then you can work out whats next to bin/replace :)

The timing on this scooter and marks has been se up correctly. The TDC mark was set up with the head off. and set up more accurately with the tool that goes in spark plug hole and a timing disc. The engine runs reasonably well with a 22mm carb. But using such would inhibit the performance....The pick up,LT coil and generating circuit/coils have all been tested using a multi-meter and are within spec. Hopefully the naughty interdimensional beings which plaguing me at the moment will p155 off and annoy someone else... ROTFL!Comment by owner of scooter, friend of Ians.
