How hot is too hot?

Hi,
recently rebuilt my 125 dl with GT 186 kit. Done about 300 or so miles and all running well. Timing 17 btdc, b8es plug. Spark plug nice and dark. Re-torqued the cylinder head. The thing is the engine casing and rear hub feel way too hot. Too hot to touch when I have been out for a spin. Toolbox feels hot as do the contents. Now maybe I have just never taken much notice of the engine before I rebuilt it but is this just tooooo hot or am I being paranoid?? Appreciate any advice.

hi sorry i dont have an answer but i have the same kit and thought my engine mounts seemed quite hot after a run , but after around 600 miles it hasnt caused me any problems. ps. i also hadnt noticed if they were getting hot previous to putting the kit on either.

I know it sounds weird but running too rich can cause a hot condition with the motor. Get the jetting dialed in correctly, light coffee/cream colored plug and the engine will run cooler.

And leaner!
light coffee/crem colour is to us on this side of the pond a Rich Tea Biscuit colour and IMHO too light, I prefer (and always advise) being closer to the Bourbon end of the Biscuit scale.

I prefer between dairymilk (good) and bournville (a little rich) also when the air gets cooler and denser in winter it will be leaner still

Well I must say I am impressed by the depth of biscuit related knowledge on the forum. I have taken your advice and been carrying a range of biscuits in my toolbox from custard creams right through to plain chocolate hob nobs. The trouble is when I stopped to check my spark plug colour against my biscuit selection they had all melted in to a gooey mess. Does this mean my engine is still running too hot?

^^nice one Dave, but am sure you get the picture^^
at least you have noticed it's running hot at mo, you could back timing off a little say to 16/15 an see if that helps ?
you not mentioned if it's a complete engine rebuild or just top-end ?
carb same/exhaust ?
if you have noticed it being hot then chances are it will let go (holed piston/seize) as I have learned haha. hmmmm biccy n a brew yam yam.
