varitronic flywheel problem

Hi,
I am just rebiulding my TS1 250, and have been resetting my varitronic timing.

I spotted what i thought were three m6 washers stuck under the magnets on the flywheel on closer inspection, it was the heads of the rivets holding the flywheel to the taper boss that have come off.

Whilst i am glad to have found this problem in my shed and not on the m6 heading towards Kelso, i am a little disappointed as it has only done 1500 miles!!

Has anybody else come across this? and what have you done to rectify it? could i use high tensile bolts? or possibly weld it to the boss?

Kev.

Ring Cambridge Lambretta, as I believe they have been modifying these on high powered motors.....

My brother-in-law's varitronic flywheel sheared off while he was thrashing his RB. Not pretty. If you look at the Camlam site they now have a warning about using the unwelded type with tuned engines

thanks for the replies,

I noticed the warning on camlam site last night, and i will ring them tomorrow as they were closed today.

also read that they modify the flywheels for high powered motors at extra cost, but no details of what they actually do.

martinr did you weld your own flywheel or did camlam do it? and if so did you /they have it re-balanced? do you have any pictures of it welded?

I could weld it myself, but i am concerned about distortion to flywheel taper and balance factor.

Hello all,
4 years later and i still have not sorted this. I have decided to get my Lambretta back on the road.

After a bit of internet searching i have come across the casa/parmakit ignition, which looks almost identical to the varitronic, but with the advantage of a solid flywheel and no rivets to break off.

Has anyone fitted the casa/parmakit flywheel onto a varitronic stator? Is it a straight replacement? Also is anyone selling these in the UK?

Thanks Kev.

No, but Rimini Lambretta offer the Parmakit flywheel as a spare and have a 2/3-day post service from Italy.

Thanks, i have seen this on the Rimini site, and will order it from them. I see that you can have a 2.7kg or lighter 2.0kg flywheel.

I know that the varitronic is approx. 1.8kg, so the 2kg option is nearest to this and will give the crank a easier time? less rotating mass? any thoughts on this?
