I have got to get a repair done on an italian headset. Is there any particular type of aluminium welding that is required Tig, Mig, special ally rods? I haven't got a clue

Don't know but if its a split near the thread make sure its done well as I had one welded up then expensively painted and it continued to split...

Take it to an engineering shop, some nice chap will sort that for ye, I had my jet bottom set mig welded up that was pretty poor and broken, he made a cracking job, mind you id have sacked the pratt if he hadnt lol.

It will depend on whether its the headset top or bottom and the size of the repair, the top will distort if its a large area to weld the bottoms are less likely to . Tig is usually better but as said there are plenty of welding places around now that make alloy racing fuel tanks and the like and these are quite good and reasonably priced for small repairs. Af rayspeed have a very good alloy welder who is use to welding scooter parts if that helps.

If you was to go for tig make sure its a real old head with in depth knowledge of heat control, tig is an art form and makes a lovely job in the right hands, in the wrong hands it could end up a jelly mould

Wouldn't go that far Andy. With practise, anything can be done.
When welding whichever half needs to be welded, welding with the other half attached might not be a bad idea, Might help help things stay aligned when the welded upon part cools.
As Andy said though, take it to someone who really knows what they are dealing with, probably going to end up a better job in the long run.
Being old and or a head is nothing but profiling
