Hi all I've just received a new GP top and bottom headset and they are rougher than a badgers a*#e and the top isn't a particularly good match. Would it hurt if I ground some of the flashing of to get them to fit a bit better and while I'm at it could I also grind off the four lumps on the bottom? I think these are for mirror mounts. Obviously I won't grind too much off or none at all if it will compromise the strength of the headset.

grind the bosses off by all means but with out the head set in front of me I cant really say how or where you should fettle them and also remember to match up the rim at the same time

With the two halves bolted together you should be able to see where they touch and where there are gaps looking at the inside. I use needle files to remove material where they touch until the gaps get smaller and smaller. Sometimes shaving material from the outer sides to fit in the recesses. I wouldn't grind anything though. With enough patience and enough time you can get them to fit pretty well. You may need to "shape" the 2 holes where the screws go through to bolt the 2 pieces together as they rarely line up. Actually that's probably the best place to start, I usually end up with "ovalised" holes. I've done a few but it's a good job I don't charge myself an hourly rate, I'd be bankrupt.
I'm convinced that the 2 halves are made by different companies.
