Hi, just finishing the restoration of 1964 LI150 Special and I've noticed a rather juddery/clunking noise coming from the Front hub/Forks under braking. Can anyone advise what the problem could be. I am pretty sure it's not the fork bearing as I have already replaced these, so I'm gusseing it's either the hub bearings or the damper springs. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers Chris

The front fork springs, seats, rods, link bushes should be changed as a matter of course on any restoration :? That said, you will always get a slight clonk (not judder) on braking due to the inherent play in the hub locating pin and socket.

Like he said, the socket on the hub will be worn, causing the lug on the fork link to slop from side to side, especially when braking. Get a can of Stella, drink it, then cut a strip of metal from said can and wrap it round the lug. Job done :)

place your left thumb OVER the area between the headset and the chrome ring.

Now push the scooter forward and apply the front brake.

Can you detect any play between the headset and the chrome ring?

If you can, your steering cxolumn bearings need replacing/ adjusting, which could account for the noise you mention.

If there is no movement, then its likely to be as outlined in the above responses.

Any mechanical advice that involves drinking a can of Stella is excellent in my book! :D
