Had one of those "could have been nasty" moments last night as I set off for the Weds night ride out. Literally just off the drive and heading up the street when the scoot went very loud followed by the back wheel locking up. Thankfully i wasn't going fast so didn't end up sliding along the tarmac.
Obviously the exhaust had popped off but very worryingly the rear welded tab had failed (maybe at the same time, maybe not) so there was no more support holding the pipe on and it slipped off an jammed against the back tyre.
I'm going to look at some better way of securing the pipe but what would be a better (and safer) alternative?
The scoot is a PX200 with a 210 Polini so basically something that would be a direct replacement without any major tweaking.

Could you use a strap round the whole thing, rather than a tab? (have no idea what a vespa exhaust looks like.) I did something like on an old brit knacker.
I found using two layers of thin metal worked better than one thick. Got that idea from the horn mountings of the time.

I was thinking the same actually. Going to bring it into the workshop and see what i can get done. The main problem is that it just doesn't line up so you end up stressing the tab and hence run the risk of it breaking off. This is the second simonini I've had on the scoot and the 2nd time it's happened so i'm also looking at safer alternatives now. Just as well i was only crawling along, if i'd been pelting along at 80 i dread to think of the consequences.

What about welding some tabs on it and use springs?

I was thinking of welding the tab back on and then putting a strap round it as well and drilling it all in line, belt and braces. Might even be able to get a resiliant mount in there too with a little modification. Either way, it's not going back on without some extra safeguards! POS exhaust...!

Yeah I had a butcher at those, along with a few other potentials like Revolver which have good reviews. Also toying with the idea of giving it to a local exhaust specialist with a view to them knocking up a stainless version.

However, we've had the Simonini in the workshop this morning. The tab has been re-welded (the original weld was garbage) plus we've welded a strap to the tab and run that all round the pipe and tacked it in several places. Belt and braces.

I give up, can't get the thing to line up no matter what I do so that Simonini is getting slung.

Ebay here we come.... Toss up between the SIP Road Race one and a Revolver RH, we'll see how flush I'm feeling but the Revolver is s/s and I'm a bit worried that with the SIP I might not be getting the best out of the 210 polini. Hmm...

It's a flippin deathtrap atm. Might have another go getting that rear tab rewelded in the right place and keep it as a spare. I certainly wouldn't fit it without that.

Yeah i read somewhere about the scootrs downpipe as well, can't really find anything to back it up though?
