I fancy a real 80's style skelly and wondered what sort of money we would be talking ? would it be cheaper to buy one or build one from bits ?

cant say how much but if we are talking completly from scractch ... as in you have no parts allredy then its always going to be cheaper to buy outright

Just my opinion so don't get stressed but if I had one you could have it for nothing, just don't do anything for me but everyone to their own etc etc...
