just setting up a varitronic ignition. ordered a new back plate for the stator and its marked with 6 incriments and a and r . now according to camlam the early version just had the a and r either side of the slots and when fitting the early type turn it fully anti clockwise. now i thought that i would have got the latest type since i only got it back end off last year and its marked with a and r either side of the slots and with 6 incriment marks, if its the later type you set to the midle. which type have i got ?. i can not ask camlam as they are busy stock taking for the next few days. cheers simon

From the Cam Lam Help and downloads:
"There are two versions of the stator plate, there we a very few early versions, these have a slot with A & R marked each side.
All subsequent versions can be identified by having six increments marked on the stator and feature more choice for timing settings."

I've just got a varitronic for an engine i'm building. What it says to me is that all of the stator plates (new or old) have a and r on them (advance or retard) but the newer version has six increments on it. It sounds like the older one had less choice than the six increments.
You should have a small leaflet with the kit too that shows a pic of the timing marks on a scoot. Once you have it on and start it your going to have to strobe it anyway to get the timing at tickover you want.
They recommend 19 degrees at fast tick over if running an expansion and 21 degrees i believe for a clubman style pipe.
Hope this helps.
