I have just had a look in the petrol tank of a new project I have got and it has quite a lot of surface rust. What would be the best way to get rid of this , is there some sort of chemical solution you can put in to remove it, don't want to coat it or anything like that.
Thanks

The old way was to use a bit of chain and give it a god shake. Nuts and bolts can cause little dings which can be hard to get out. The chain you keep hold of one end.
Something like Naval Jelly or its imitators should do. I bought a gallon of phosphoric acid which works well and may be the active ingredient, but be careful.
http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/andyspatch/rust.htm may give you some ideas, care with the electrode in the tank though! I have seen this done on old bike parts and it was great, a bit slow maybe but through.
Any method needs care to clean out the crap afterwards
