Hello, a bit of advice needed,
My mate has bought the mugello 186 v4 for his gp 150 engine , it has the gp 150 gear box in it and we were wondering if it is possible to keep this and just change the crown wheel and front sprocket to achieve animal drive of 5.2 which we think by looking at other posts is about right. With buying the kit funds are a bit short to purchase an LI gearbox as well so any advice on this set up would be welcome. We may be well off how to achieve the final drive so hopefully someone can point us in the right direction . Also it has an AF clubman exhaust
Thanks in advance :)
James

Hi James,

When you say "GP150" gearbox is this the Italian or Indian one? Both have a big jump between 3rd and 4th, the Indian one being particularly severe :(
Additionally, what carb/filter do you plan to run with it?

James,
I've got a v4 Mugello with a 24mm Mikuni and Clubman. Nice relaxed ride on a (cheap) late Li 125 box with 17 / 46 and a 81 link chain. Final drive 1:4.98.
The thing you have to watch is by increasing your front sprocket teeth you increase the gap between 3rd and 4th. You'll end up revving the nuts off it in 3rd just to get it to start pulling in 4th.
My advice would be:
1) download the excellent (and free) Gearbox Visualiser by Tony Cassidy (http://www.avantone.wordpress.com) to see the effects of changing sprockets on various gearboxes;
2) scour ebay for a cheap (possibly unfashionable) late Li 125 gearbox. N.B. with the recent influx of Cyclone 5 speed boxes there maybe a lot of reasonably priced Li 150 gearboxes on ebay soon ;)
Cheers,
Nigel

You'd need 17 x 48 to get 5.2 final drive. 48 crownwheels are not commonplace. If the current chain is worn you might get away fitting a 16 front sprocket to get 5.3 or use an 81 chain with a pull down chain tensioner.

I was running a Muggy 186 with a 30mm PHBH and JL3 with a Indian GP150 box on it. No matter what sprocket / crown wheel configuration I tried the gap between 3rd and 4th was a right bugger.

I ended up putting an LI 150 box in it with 16 X 46, it totally transformed it.

Thank you all for your replys, :) . We will have to have a rethink on the set up and try and maybe try and find a good value LI 150 gear box . If anyone knows of one going cheap because of the cyclone box ;) please feel free to let us know . One again thank you all for the advice
