Lights - or lack of!

I have a jet 200 and the lights were poor when I bought it. Since then changed the stator to a BGM 120, tried various bulbs , led halogen etc and various voltage regulators. Still poor, dangerously so. Have cleaned all the earths so could the problem be that the wiring loom is just not up to scratch? It is the original one on a 74 plate scooter? Or would it carry the required power either fully or not at all?

Did you fit new flywheel with the stator and regulator ?

Rear light wiring the wrong way around, meaning that the higher wattage brake light is on with other lights, rather than the lower wattage rear running light? This give the symptom that you speak of. Funnily enough, I sorted the same fault on a mate's rebuilt Jet 200, which was a simple fix considering people were suggesting buying new ignition systems :roll:

Certainly worth checking!

Yes bought new lightened flywheel when I changed other bits. Adam , will try your advice.

While you are checking the bulb: make sure the power to the rear light and earth female bullet terminals on the bulb holder/reflector are crimping the loom bullets tightly so they do not push through as you install the reflector unit into place. Thisd one got me once...new loom etc later, noticed the terminals pushed through as the reflector was pushed home and were arcing to the reflector :oops:

Scooter Restorations have some newly available NOS Servetta 'blocky' switches if it comes to that.

Changed the wires over although couldn't mind if they were on wrong or not (just pulled them off and then got distracted although I thing the black and pink were crossed over judging by how the wires were sitting when I had the light off) , redone the earth wire and the rear light is certainly better. Not sure about the headlight though , will need to road test although it looks an improvement in the garage but this might just be wishful thinking and I 'm not sure just how bright I am expecting them. Are we talking PX halogen brightness, cos it isn't that good.

Not as bright as that....it would be totally out of character wouldn't it? Unless you are a VERY late LINCE/LINX case whereby you can probably legitematly polish your terminals some more and hope to out-power the local Vespa Cosa 200 pretender...

You will need to ensure that the right wires are going to the correct sides of the rear bulb, with the thinner running light filament being fed by the lighting circuit and the thicker brake light filament lighting from the foot brake circuit. If these are the wrong way around the rear light will blow regularly and the headlight will be dim.

If your wiring follows the standard Italian colours then your rear brake feed is the pink one. However, the best way to check this is with the rear light lens off so that you can actually see that the correct filament (thin) lights when the lights are switched on and that the correct filament (thick one) lights when you put your foot on the brake.
