Front Sprocket Assembly????

Just about to re-fit my front sprocket assembly (series 1) and I noticed that the top part that hte bolt sits in is very narrow, I've compred it with some others I have and it's about half as deep. The others are about 10mm but the one I took off is about 5mm deep?? 
I didn't know there where different types. Are they interchangable and would I be better off fitting the deeper one or putting the original set up back on?
