hello

I have an imola 186, with a phbh28, jl3 exhaust, sacchi filter, gp200 indian gearbox, now with 18/47 ratio and 82link chain.

It feels like it only works in 1st, 2nd and 3th gear, and in 4th it falls dead.

any advice on that primary gearing?

thx

what you need is one of those new fangled 5 speed boxes

or an eetalyun LI 150 one

Your final ratio with that set up is 5.22, which is about as low as you get and the Indian box has a slightly better 3rd to 4th jump than the Italian one...

Put Li150 box in with those sprockets and you'll get 4.42, and if it won't pull the GP gears it is unlikely to pull that.

Changing to 15 x 46 and the Li box would give you 5.21 which isn't all that different.

I think you to look at why it's not getting into the power in top first

I have an imola and it goes like a train.

Gearing is LI Pacemaker 150 g/box with 15/46 sprockets if that's of any use?

Cheers :fb:

That makes sense as that works out with a fourth gear final drive of 5.65.
you are running 5.22 which may be a little tall for a small block to pull nicely. You can find some sprocket and chain combos that will get you closer to 5.6 on your gp200 box but you may need to change both sprockets and chain.
It is also true that the better your motor is set up the more likely it is to pull tall gearing.
Hope this helps

p.s. to choose sprocket combos avantones gear calculator program is great. you should be able to find the link to download on this site somewhere.

Mine did too with the same set up plus TMX27 and scootrs pipe. Revvy kit, revvy gearing and revvy pipe makes for much fun. Suppose it did over 70 like that but chasing a bit more top end I dropped it to 5.00 and JL3 and it was crap. It was a relief when I holed the piston as it gives me a chance to return it to the previous set up but with Franspeed Race. That's plan A when the sun next shines.

Really should eat 5.2 gearing, particularly with that pipe when set up correctly. Jeez built onr for a lass 10 years ago on that spec (30PHBH not 28) It would lift the front wheel off the throttle in 2nd easy. lasted 8 years and eventualy twisted the MEC race crank. New crank + bearing build and back to form.

Think u might just need to adjust jetting if all else is well :^)

in my old one i tried indian 200 crap, indian 150 crap, italian LI 150 loads better, soz i cant remember the sprocket sizes but it had a JL3 and 28 mikuni,un matched casings, 18 bhp went like stink and the only TS1 that ever beat me was a 240, and that only cought me in 3rd gear,
oh and it was built by a man in doncaster with a big dog

Don't have my gearing calculator to hand but what speed would you be doing at 6.5/7k revs with a final of 5.6?

I have had it flat out at 77mph, clocked on GPS and thats what it also said on my sip digi speedo but that was probably reving at about 9000rpm or something like that.
