Uprated clutches.....is there any need?

Hi all, after having problems with several 'uprated' clutches in my 20BHP Imola, i decided to try a standard 4 plate job and just added some uprated springs and decent plates. And after several months of stress and frustration i have lovely clutch with no slip or drag. So it's got me thinking, are we throwing money at these 'uprated' items for no reason other than for the sake of it and because they look good? Anything over 20BHP is perhaps a different matter though.

After eating a 4 plate and 5 plate with the avanti turned out my springs were pooh..now have fitted MB strong springs and the clutch is faultless..is a 6 plate now though but i reckon it would have been fine with the 4 plate and these springs

I fitted MB springs and they are the difference I think. Excellent springs.

ive been running my avanti with a four plate clutch using MB spider /pressure plate and springs and it has been so far faultless with over 1000 miles on it .
one thing i did do though was to lightly 'roughen"the steel spacers with sone coarse sand paper to help get better surface tension with the bgm cork plates .

I'd assume that the clutch was the standard SIL unit then? As I said decent springs and plates are more than adequate for most engines. Only my opinion though.....

The gearbox and sprockets will make a big difference. A gp puts far less strain on the clutch than an sx.
