thanks

Im not sure what you mean when you say original cdi unless you mean the one that came with the kit.

I have one of the very early varitronics and it came with a ducati cdi as per original equipment on vespas which is what most electronic kits come with as standard so, given Ive been running mine for about 10 years then I'd say there's no issues and would be wired the same

i have two spade ends on original cdi (supplied with kit) and the vespa/ducati type has four spade ends

Hmmmmm in that case Im at a loss, as I say, mines literally been on a decade with absolutely no issue with it so never had a look

but one will be a earth for the cutout so that should surely be the same on the 4 pin one?

On looking again though at the diagram it may be more complicated :freak:

So ignore my earlier brain fart and hopefully someone else will be along that might be able to suss it out.

I've been thinking about this since we talked yesterday.
The varitronic coil is more like a standard type coil than a CDI.
I don't know, but maybe the bits that the CDI do are within the stator electronics...?
So just some old Indian coil could work if replacing a duff varitronic one...
Assuming, your wiring matches the diagram, connect the red/black wire to where the green would go [and have your kill wire connected to this also], and earth the coil with the blue wire.
Check the varitronic is working as it should with a strobe
Obviously I take no responsibility for the demise of your varitronic stator if that's all pony

As far as I know the stator only has a feed coil, the charging of the cap and triggering of the thyristor happens within the CDI unit all from one AC supply. This is why it fires twice on each revolution (2 complete AC cycles).
A standard coil won't work as it won't have a sudden collapse of voltage and a Ducati one won't work because it has nothing to trigger it.
