anyone using one? thinking of doing a 172 cc reed motor to go in a spare frame i have for next year. the option of doing a T5 lump, malossi 172 etc, but buying a decent T5 engine is 500 quid-ish, then a reed kit, etc, whearas ive got some good px casings, gearbox, good crank, all the gubbins, and the M1XL comes with a reed on the barrel, manifold -head the lot. bit pricey at £460 for the kit, but i wont have to buy an expensive engine to put it on. got 2 or 3 different PX exhausts to put on it for now, and 28 and 30mm carbs to try. T5 malossi kit and a SIP cylinder head is 500 quid..... see where i"m coming from? (the M1XL uses a reed on the barrrel, and you block up the original crankcase induction for the carb with a plate bolted down, although i will probably ally weld this up, along with welding round the transfers etc.) so, what are they like?

One of my friends has got one.
If you want to install it on a pre-px frame you have to cut something on the frame because it isn't a straight fit.
Performance wise it is very fast, it pulls 22/65 gearing but you have to use the Quattrini pipe and a 30mm carb to have the full performance from the kit.
You can expect also 25km/l of fuel consumption.
The M1xl of my friend kicks out 24 bhp, combined with the lighter frame of his Vespa compared to my Lammy 240 we are the same performances on the road....

cheers for the reply! got a scorpion, sito plus, and simonini exhausts, (and a sterling or PM i think) to try, big carb will be vital, and i"m not bothered about cutting bits off the frame (its gonna be matt black anyway, all the money will be in the engine) 25km/liter! thats 70mpg!

The Scorpian is the only pipe that has a a chance of pulling that with what you have other than perhaps the PM if genuine.

I personally wouldn't put too much faith in the Quattrini / Zirri dedicated pipes.

phil, you can have first dabs at a gan when its on the road. juan, i"d probly try the scorpion first, and see how it goes. like i said, ive got the pipes and other bits already, so that keeps the cost down a bit. i sold my Malossi P2 to a mate round the corner, and my other mate who lives round the other corner has a malossi 172 T5 that ive just put YSS shocks on yesterday.... ive only got me standard -ish P200,so ive got the slowest vespa in the village.......and we cant be havin that !

If you are going to fit teh M1XL, the only pipe that works is the dedicated Quattrini pipe.
It is totally different from the previuos Zirri pipes.
Have a look at a comparison between pipes....

Many of us have tried different pipes on m1x/m1xl, but the one that works is the M3PX aka Quattrini Pipe.

Not true! ! ! I've had a Quattrini M1XL on a large frame 1963 GL ( PX 125 engine casing ) for three years. You dont have to cut any framework at all and the best pipe to fit is the JL made RZ right hand not the Quattrini one as it provides as much power but more torque and lower down too. It is't however a straight forward bolt on kit with nearly every part of the engine needing modification including transfer port welding, gearbox area welding to strengthen and you are limited on your choice of carb due to the very narrow space that it sits in. Also you will have to fabricate a one off air filter as the carb faces the rear wheel and all the muck that it throws up. A fuel pump is required, mine feeds a separate header tank which then gravity feeds the carb .A centre plug head cowl along with some tin work to maximise the flow of the cooling air around the obstruction caused by the inlet manifold/red block is also needed. To get the best out of this kit the exhaust port needs raising slightly and a lightened flywheel fitting . Once done everything fits nicely under standard GL / Sprint side panels and gives a lovely very fast road bike which incidently is 5 stone lighter than a GP Lambretta. I built mine myself with some important final tweeks and setting up at Chiselspeed but Martin Cooke at Chiselspeed is the man to speak to if prefer to let someone elsedo the spanner work. I hope this helps

thanks gadgetman, i know it wont be a pure bolt on kit, and i"ll be getting the ally welding done at a local engineering firm i use all the time, clutch bit as well, thats a weak point on even a standard P2. looking at using a battery pump from SIP, and chopping bits off the bodywork isnt a problem. embryonic stages ....... and all that!...... 8-)

I ride Tony cummings px sprinter , it uses the m1xl barrell early kit with non reed on barrell , v force reeds in mmw block on casings and 38 keihin ,frame needs cutting to clear carb. im sure he has put up dyno graph in dyno section, 34 bhp and a wide power spread although ports modified, excellent quality kit. ive just checked vespa dyno section ( mattsdad).
Fairspares Lambretta workshop.
