Series 1 Oil Thrower Washer??

Just rebuilding a sreries 1 engine and wondered if you can and is it worthwhile fitting an oil thrower washer? Would I need to get the caseing machined to be the same as the more modern lumps with the recess or can you fit one in place anyway?
