Hi all,

Done some searches on here but couldn't find the exact answer to the info I'm after, so hopefully someone can help??

So, as subject line states, I have Varitronic and want to use a battery (charged by the varitronic) to power the EGT and the back light on my Koso rev counter.

However, what I can't work out, is how I use (or if I can) the ignition switch to turn the gauges ON/OFF, as I've just found out (when wiring up) that neither of them have their own separate ON/OFF switches, so when connected to the battery they are obviously permanently on!

Ideally the EGT needs to be ON (and powered by the battery) once the ignition switch is turned to any ON position (ie. with or without lights) and the back light of the rev counter to come on (and powered by the battery) when I switch the ignition to lights on position.

Is this all possible, and if so, can someone give me an idiots guide on how to do this??

There is no solution, that I'm aware of, using the standard ignition switches that gives you a switched live on position 1 ( ignition on, no lights). I think most add an accessory switch of some description between the battery and the toys...

Similar with the Wassell conversion the brake switch and horn are live all the time with a standard or simplified loom, especially if you wire it so the live dc feed goes to the loom and the battery

I always worked on the theory of always riding with my lights on and wired gauges up to position 2, that way if my EGT gauge wasn't working it also served as a reminder to switch my lights on

Ok, thanks mate, would like to try and avoid any additional switch if possible, though quite happy to have lights on all the time to switch power to the gauges etc.

Hi mate,

As mentioned in my reply to above post, I'm quite happy to have lights on all the time to switch power to the gauges etc., however, to do this I assume I would connect the battery directly to either the brown power wire in the headset (which then means I could have DC horn as well ) that comes up from the regulator, and then connect gagues to either the headlamp or rear light power feeds.

My main concern in doing this, is wouldn't I be mixing AC feed in the brown wire from regulator, with DC feed directly from the battery, is this ok?? And also, would the ignition switch be able to cope with the DC power running through it whilst the gauges are on??

Sorry, for so many questions, but as stated in my original thread, I've done lots of searches and can't find anyone who has done exactly what I'm trying to do, and just want to avoid blowing up/frying my gaugues, electrics etc.

Hmm, I never thought about mixing them (AC & DC) on the same wire, so I dunno

Thanks for your input guys, for the time being I am going to fit a separate switch for the gauges and horn, until I can find another way of doing this.

Apparently, ScootRs (am I allowed to say that name on this forum now ) do an ignition switch that might serve my needs, which I will have a look into.

yep, the ignition switch that ScootRS supply will do what you want, in hte "off" position it can effectively disconnect the battery [also useful if you are using a vespa 5-pin rectifier, connect the C terminal to this to avoid the battery draining]. But it is really just a generic motorcycle switch. Go to a bike breakers with your multi-meter and find something that suits your needs.
I have wired Italian switches to control AC and DC, they have more seperate connections within them, but Indian ones or the common aftermarket type shouldn't be used with both.
You could hard wire your lights, and use the igntion switch to turn on the gauges...?
