Morning all
Ive picked up a 02 PX125 for the wife and a 97 T5 classic for the lad and a set of T5 engine cases for a steal. The fella that i got them off said the T5 has a problem with the clutch bearing in the cases so he got the matched cases to do the swap and then lost interest.
The plan is to rebuilt the T5 with the new cases and then drop into the wifes PX as shes been riding for a year now on a smallframe and fit the slower PX into the classic for the boy to learn on.
The T5 is abit tricky to get into 3rd, what could cause this ??
Also the wife wants to keep the softer Cosa clutch....are the clutches interchangable between the 2 motors ???
Ive never delved into a Vespa lump so any hints/tips would be appreciated folks

Cheers
It selects 1st and 2nd sweet, to get 3rd you have to give it abit of a jiggle
I could live with it, but the fact that the its for a novice rider it needs to be sorted
Its been sugested that it could be the oil pump drive washer effecting the clutch ???
Im gonna get on the fone today and order up a full rebuild kit, holding tools and flywheel puller
No doubt ill be asking some more stupid questions in the future so bare with me folks

Yea the cosa clutch will go in but Im a bit worried as to exactly what the original seller was telling you was wrong if you needed a new set of casings! That doesnt sound like a simple clutch swap, sounds like the casings are fecked due to the clutch bearing itself and the problem here is, if the bearings done that kinda damage to the casings, what's it done to the crank
If it was only the oil pump washer affecting the clutch, that's 3 bolts and off with the cover, one nut and off with the clutch assembly and check the washer. You just don't fork out for another set of casings for such a minor problem :-/ That's like stubbing a toe and having your leg put in plaster
If you can, I'd be contacting the guy you bought it off and finding out exactly what he believes is wrong with the engine and how he came to this conclusion.

Have you checked the gear cables and gear selector?

Cheers Donnie.....i actually know the lad that i got the scoots off. He's a commuter not a scooterist and knows feck all so was taking his T5 up the R Aguis on the Edgeware road in London for servicing ect. The money that he's handed over to them is astonishing as ive got the reciepts. They told him that the clutch bearing had worn the cases and that they had used chemical metal to secure it in place as he could afford new cases n rebuild thru them. The new matching cases came along a while later with the intension of rebuilding it himself with the aid of a manual to save money. Both the scoots ended up sitting in his garage for 2 years so i relieved him of both for 1100 english quids
Ive got a full gasket/seal set sorted, full bearing set chilling in the fridge....the rebuild will start this weekend

I'd say its either cruciform gear cables not correctly tightend or the dreaded 22mm cosa turret depth

Have you opened the casings up. If the clutch bearing is damaged and he has been riding it for a while, he may have damaged the bearing seating area on the casing. This may also be the problem with gear selection. Your crank may be wobbling a little, causing the clutch to move as well as the primary drive. When a bearing goes, it's a case of a complete rebuild using all new bearings, seals and replacing the cruciform. This is a must, clutch corks and woodruff keys would also be better replaced at this time.
If you have two T5 engines, I would order two of everything above so I had a spare set.
