frame steering stops

anyone got any experiences of re welding steering stops on the inside of the frame tube theyd like to share?

i drill a couple holes in the tube where you want the stop and plug weld it in position

I'd be interested in the welding too. After a tumble the piece on the fork rode over the edge of the welded stop inside the frame tube, wearing both of them away. Building up the weld on the forks then filing it square shouldn't be an issue and hoping that similar can be done inside the frame tube but I've not let a competant welder have a look at it yet.

A couple of large bolts in a tapped hole then welded would save a lot of farting about...

I like farting about, I don't like drilling unneccesary holes in my Ital'yun frame.

That's what I've done in the past with no problems, it's a lot less faffing about.

Very strange -- just come on here to search exactly about this.
I was assembling my forks into frame this morning -- all going well I thought, then I gave a final tighten, heard a ping, and the forks moved all the way round on one side. Took it apart again and out fell the metal piece.

Rather relieved to see there is a fix. Mine is also an Italian frame, just back from painters, so althugh not ideal, I don't think I want a welder all over it. So I think I'll go for the bolt option. Why would it need welding as well though (as mentioned above) - presume if you drill holes in a frame and tap them, and then some loctite on the bolts this sould be robust enough?

Does this piece of metal, and the corresponding bit on the forks have any other purpose?

the steering tube on the frame is only approx 2.75mm thick which if tapped for bolts is really not thick enough to give adequate and lasting strength...in time the bollts will work loose and you will then end up having to weld anyways ..so bite the bullet and weld in properly to start with

drill the hole in the frame and tap the stop,as more to fix to,
or just weld it,.
just weld a rod to the stop,place down the stock and weld,
well thats what i did,

What kind of welder to do this -- I assume an arc welder so you can get the rod down the tube -- scuse my ignorance.
