Varitronic regulator, DC out question?

I'm running a varitronic in AC (no battery) on my TS1. I'm going to be running a GPS speedometer. I was told that I'm good to go with setting up the speedo with the DC power out from the regulator. My question is, does the wire from the stator (red/white to charge battery) need to be plugged in in order for the power to be fed to the DC out?
Thanks

Yes http://www.lambretta.co.uk/downloads/vari1.jpg You may also find there will not be enough power (trickle charge only) to run the speedo so you will need to fit a battery or capacitor to hold the speedo memory if it has one.
