stage 4 200,indian electronic stator new, standard flywheel, when strobing timing set to 18 degrees on tick over soon as i rev it up pointer goes off the scale but still seems to rev up ok,not had a ride on it yet so dont know what its like on the road, any ideas why pointer goes nuts ?

What do you mean by pointer ? the arrow on the Flywheel?

Sometimes a loose connection or short elsewhere on the bike or on the ignition system can cause this sort of interference.

Usually stops when I put a new stator on. It's a tw@7 of a thing to try and trace....

Also, sometimes on 'static' ign, say set at 17 degrees, ill strobe up and its actually ticking over at maybe 16 and as you increase revs it climbs to maybe 18 degrees.....! Nightmare.

I thought this was normal.... :O

Isn't it caused by the fact that it takes a microsecond for the points to open / close, and the faster the flywheel is rotating, the more it has time to travel during this "lag" and the timing point will move..?

Depends on what combo of flywheel/stator/cdi is used.....but most I strobe sut where I set them, others retard slightly....say from 17 to 16 which I live with.....but those that go in the wrong direction can cause heating problems, some are really bad and will go from 17 up to 19/20 at full chat.....I change those ones.

its only a cheap cdi ive got a decent cdi will try that on,pointer doesnt move a few degrees it moves right round flywheel about 3 to 4 inches.
