Just got a quick question, got my engine out to sort some minor problems. I have noticed the flywheel is caked in oil as is the cowling, is that that the fly wheel side seal may have gone or that the carbs sp[it back is being sucked into the flywheel? Just wondered if those running an open mouth carb on the flywheel side have noticed there is caked in oil?

Cheers,

most likely carb spit, could also be exhaust manifold gasket leaking.

Yep, the spitback covers my flywheel cowl, inside the sidepanel the runner and anything rearward of the carb including the hub ,It doesn't take long for it to happen either. My cheap chrome flywheel cowl looks like new when I wipe the crud off though and I suspect it would have rusted away to nothing by now if I ran a filter

So i think its the cobinations of both carb spit back and exhaust leakage.

well yes and no, here's another two to add to the works,

cylinder-head and base gasket leaking.

be best too do a top-end overall, at least it will be clean and tidy afterwards haha, but also eliminates them to be leaking.

Ive just had top end, wanted to see how it was getting on in there. Think there may have been some slight blowing, but nothing much. But the piston has some makrs on it...
