Is this layshaft ok to use with a tuned engine?

I need to replace my layshaft as my hub went and damaged the threads. I found one in the garage that was like my original one, so thought i would use this. But the gears do not turn freely at all when on the shaft and i dont want to use this. I also have this type of layshaft in the garage as well. It is much fatter than the original, so i was wondering if people recomend using these shafts. I dont want to put something to strip it down again, if using it is a no no i would rather get something that is up to the jobs. My main worry is the extra weight, or am i being over cautious? Thanks

Just to add, it is in pretty good condition.

Their is nothing wrong with being over cautious were a Lambretta is concerned..if theirs an element of doubt in your mind then change it ..it will always be at the back of your mind when fully loaded and mile munching

Coiuld it be an MB layshaft? it might be worth giving them a ring if you're not sure (good shaft btw). Is the one that is tight a SIL/Innoccenti/Servetta one? if so why not use a strip of fine emery cloth to polish the gear bearing area, it probably won't need more than a couple of minutes gently work.

It's not a MB layshaft. The only difference if the center section is much fatter, everything fits it ok.

It's an early style layshaft. I think S1 or S2 so will be approaching 50 years old.

Personally I'd rather fit an new one. SIL from Restos for £40 for or MB if MINO...
