Just bought this and it's hard to ride smoothly
The seller said it jumped out of 4th but it appears to jump out of all the gears.
Most noticeably is 4th though.
You can hold it in gear but you can feel it dropping out as it physically moves the gearshift as well.
Apparently it's had some gears replaced recently but it still does it
Does it sound like cruciform, selector box or just poorly adjusted ?
4th doesn't line up on the headset, you really have to push it past the mark to hold it in and it kicks back out as it drops out of gear

Start with the cables make sure they're adjusted correctly.

Next is selector box take it off and check for play.

If nothing found there then it's the cruciform.

completly ignore the marks on the headset! that is just a guide! close your eyes and click through the gears if everthing feels right, then adjust the cables to fit by undoing the cable trunnions(solderless nipples in selector box) then move the headset marks in to line,then pull the slack through the trunnions and tighten, they may still be slightly out, (you can adjust with the 2 cable adjusters to get it right) I always leave a bit of slack as if its too tight it will force the gear selector out of its slot, if too slack it will cut/kink the clutch cable in 4th which then makes it harder to change gear!
but if it still does it... do as rosscla said!

personally, i"d be ripping the fucka apart to see exactly what has been replaced in the gearbox. not all px gearboxs are interchangeable, theres early and EFL styles. and you need the full lot, layshaft, selector box etc. all old style gearboxs are nearly 30 years old now, and will be a bit shagged . get it to bits!

Apparently it was done in our local scooter "specialists" but I've heard horror stories about them
I'll go the easy checking cable and selector box route first. then if it's no better it'll be in pieces

Cables were slack so I tightened them up, no slop anymore
The actual ratchet block seems to move side to side. Do these wear out and give the same symptoms ?
Is it worth trying a new selector box ? Or Am I just putting off the inevitable ?

Yes the selector boxes do wear, particularly on the pawl that connects to the selector shaft and the pin that holds the selector arm to the rotor part.
