Timing or Carb

I am about to do a 900 mile return journey in two weeks and i cant get my Li to run properly,
its a gp200 barrell on 200 casings with li150 internals. The symptons are real sluggish in first and second and then goes like a scalded cat in 3th and 4th

I recently checked the timing with a strobe i used a dial guage to find tdc and set the timing at 19 deg. I strobed the flywheel and relined the sator till the arrow on the flywheel corresponded with the 19 deg mark btdc. I ignored the with line on the black box and the two notches on the flywheel, was this the correct way of doing it.

The carb i am using is a Dellorto 26mm PHBH, not sure what the jetting is but i had it running on a Honda 205 and it ran great.

I am hoping its just a matter of down jetting the carb but was just wondering could the timing be an issue, could there be any other things i need to look at.

Thanks in advance.

It sounds like you have set the timing right by ignoring the pick up and window marks as these are often out so it could be the carb.Have you also checked the squish as many can be too large with some of the gaskets supplied. When you say it is sluggish in first and second then goes well in 3rd and 4th is this because the throttle is open wider? Post the jetting details and needle /atomiser used.

I've used the dial gauge method but I'd also try the positive stop method to confirm the TDC then stobe it and see the stode light at the BTDC mark - 19 deg or whatever. I'm a convert to the BGM 'Mark 2' stators.

I rechecked the timing it was fine, carb jetting good it turns out that the trottle control was the problem, rust plus the trottle cable catching inside the headset, when i twisted the rubber grips the grip was turning and not the trottle, sanded down the rusty bits sniped the cable back and greased up problem solved

for future referance, if you here a rattle from your engine, try tightening the peak on your helmet first. :D
