How do they compare with Franspeed Race? And are the stainless variety any good or are they prone to cracking/snapping like many other stainless expansions? Is it better to stick with mild steel?

Very different animal altogether! The 3 is just the old taffspeed /jl mk4 i believe( correct me if i'm wrong!) which will limit top end revs 7.5-8k tops , but with good tourque.
The race version still has great tourque but with the added bonus of allowing rev on to 9-10k ( although you would need a good tune to reach these on the roads).
I went from the 3 to the race on my ts1 and it really did make a vast difference, so happy bunny here
