Help with gear selector

hi gossy here just to say hi and see u l8tr
back now so here goes , just rebuilding my px 125, 99% done but just one thing
how do i put the gear selector back on both wires are on selector but not put on the gear change on head stock so
how do you know what gear your in is it fully out for 4th or all way in for 4th .pluss how do you move it in and out ? will it just push in and out
any help welcome ...
