Hi all, is it advisable to run an engine ( Imola ) without a base gasket? If so, what sealant is best to use in it's place? Cheers all.

I have run engines with only Silicon sealant on the base & head joints with no problems at all.
There are many available from bike shops & Halfords so not a problem finding the stuff. RTV Sealant normally blue or clear.

I have as well but do prefer to use a base gasket.
AF do do 0.1 ally base gaskets for the RB20s which are useful.
Before you fit check both faces for high spots and make sure no trace of old gasket on the crank case.
Make sure also that the cylinder slides nicely up and down the studs and that the spigot slides easily home. If there are problems there as you tighten the cylinder studs it can lift the barrel slightly making a gasketless joint difficult.
1104 gasket sealant is very useful for sealing the base with no gaskets.

Thanks for that Alan, I'm getting someone else to build it now, so I'll leave it with them to decide to fit one or not. Thanks again Peter.
