My egt probe has packed up again!

I am using a Mcgill motorsport egt gauge, have done for over a year now, I have gone through about 4 probes! The gauge itself works fine just the probes dont last very long. Ive spent enough on the probes now. Anyone got any ideas why they keep packing in?

The probe is installed solid mount, nut & olive, around 4 inches from the piston as the crows flies, temps were reading up to 600 - 700 degrees so nothing stupid!

Id like a koso egt gauge but dont want to lay out more money only for the probes to keep going!

The Koso gauge is very good but my first probe failed on it
I then bought the more expensive probe from Camb Lamb (its dear at £135 ) and its been very accurate and fail proof for three years.
The digital egt's are by far the best and most accurate (dont know if yours is digital or analogue). I cant see how you can tell what temp your running accurately with analogue and the better the probe you have in, the far faster and more accurate reading you get.

i also use the kosa egt gauge got mine from pm about 65 pounds had it in 8 months no problems with it

I also have a Mcgill EGT, been on for about 100 miles or so and iy failed last weekend. Sounds like mine is mounted the same as yours, mine is to the rear of the pipe. I've ordered another probe, £15.00 but haven't really investigated yet.

As fo analogue, I don't have a problem with readimg a dial, the needle is flicker free and its easy to see shifts of 5 - 10 degrees or so which is quite sufficient whilst riding imho

regarding this 4 inches away from the piston measurement. What exactly does the mean??? straight line? when the piston is tdc or bdc?????

any one know for sure? Also does it matter how far in the probe is?

If I spend the extra for a koso id like to get it right, if I havent already!

Hi. Got my Stage 6 digital gauge fitted, no issues, probe fitted 120mm from exhaust gasket and the tip of the probe is in the middle of downpipe.

Just interested what happens when the probe fails, does it simply not move at all or become erratic.
Got the same one and other than me mounting it just a tad pointing down, (not improving my JL Snail ground clearance) I was having stability problems running it direct from the Wassel DC regulator, I have fitted a battery and its now very stable like yours at 600C going up to around 700 flat out, drop back down to 40 and it drops immediately.
I did make a small cable support that clips into the head cowling to support the cable at the pivot point between the frame and engine. Its a simple bit of mig wire twisted round the stainless braiding

The gauge becomes eratic, the probe I use has braided cable around the wire but is away from the exhaust.

After my first one failed I took it to bits for a look and inside is a bi-metallic loop connected to 2 tiny wires inside the braid which one had broken off.So my next one has a spring coiled around the body and braid to hopefully prevent the wiring breaking off again plus a bracket on a headcowl screw.Been on over a year and so far so good.
